“The pilot project will be evaluated by Julian Somers, director of SFU’s centre for applied research in mental health and addiction, who said the new program addresses a completely unmet need.
Somers’ team will track the participants long term, focusing on the patients’ and relatives’ experiences with the home-based withdrawal, and whether the patients’ recovery was aided by the early involvement of loved ones.
“It’s really the ethnoracial component that sets this apart,” Somers said. “And how the delivery of the detox component within the context of people’s home, family, community and culture, how that can increase the likelihood of preventing relapse.”
Also important for preventing relapse is the program’s ability to address underlying issues in the patients’ homes that may have contributed to the addictions, both Somers and Arao said.”
