Drugs, Mental Health, Politics: Those who are homeless and addicted are offered drugs like “methadone” with zero psycho-social support.
Professionals receive markedly different and more appropriate intervention and treatment, based on their perceived value to society, says Dr. Somers.
BC is going in the wrong direction by implementing the two things the Stanford-Lancet Commission (group of expert global academic and medical practitioners) says not to do. Those are “don’t bring in vending machines to dispense more harmful drugs” and “don’t offer more publicly-funded harmful (pharmaceutical) drugs in an attempt to displace street drugs.”
Somers adds methadone therapy started out as a ‘time limited’ step to recovery and treatment. Now people are on it for decades with no additional progress toward getting off drugs entirely.
